Crique Du Freak: A Living Nightmare

A Living Nightmare (Cirque Du Freak Series #1)

Alright, I'm not going to lie to you... I didn't read this entire series of books. I got up to finishing the ninth one (and it took me a while and a lot of prodding to do it) and by then I wasn't up to reading the tenth. Let alone the eleventh. Or the twelfth.
But anyway! A Living Nightmare is Darren Shan's first book in the Cirque Du Freak series, and I have to say, this book I did love and have re read many times.
It starts out with Darren (self insertion? Love for the name Darren? WHO CARES!) talking about how he loves spiders, and he used to collect them when he was young. It then goes on to explain how Darren's best friend, Steve, is pretty much extremely  popular and, to Darren, extremely amazing. They end up going to a freak show together, 'Cirque Du Freak' where Darren finds out that Steve is obsessed with vampires and Darren steals a very poisonous and very important spider, named Madam Octa. He trains the spider, and shows her off the Steve one night. But something goes wrong, and she bites his friend, causing him to fall victim to her poison. Darren runs back to the Cirque, and finds Mr. Crepsley, the man who the spider belongs to. He makes a deal to become his assistant if the vampire saves his friend.
Darren is turned into a half vampire, and is forced to fake his death and live a life of shadows with Mr. Crepsley. He joins the Cirque, and his life gets turned upside down.

If you like vampires, you should read the books. I thought the first few were really good, but after a while it just drug on and on and the last few were too repetitive for me.
